Firsts

We all survived the first full week back to school. It was hard to get back into the old routine, when we had adopted a much more appealing routine: going to bed late and sleeping late. We missed the alarm on two mornings, but by some miracle of fast movement and quick showers, we all made it to school/work on time. MIRACLE.

I had two "first" this week:
1. I taught "Literature for Children and Young Adults"--I think I'm really going to like, although it will be a LOT of work since it's an entirely new prep. Sarah, thanks for the Marigold suggestion--I'm using it as one of my required novels; what a fun read! Have any of you read E.L. Konigsburg's The View from Saturday?

2. Yesterday, when the weather was still in the 70's, I was swinging Grace in the backyard. While swinging and visiting, I felt a "plop" on my head, instinctively reached up to touch my hair, and--ugh--discovered that a bird had just pooped on my head. As gross as this was, I'm 41 years old, and I am amazed that this is the first time this has ever happened to me, considering how many hours during those 41 years I have been outside with birds flying overhead. What a first! And let it also be a LAST. (I thought Luke would never stop laughing.)

Have a restful Saturday, friends.

Happened to me as a teenager. Don't know if having a flat top hair cut at the time made it better or worse.

Alright, I don't know "Marigold", and this is bothering me, because I, too love all good children's literature. Is is a "girl" book? We don't do many girl books around here. Let's see what I've read lately that was excellent...well, I'll have to get back to you on that because I can't remember the title right now.

I remember fearing the bird poop during my time at ACU...there were areas where the sidewalk was completely covered! It has to happen to students on a regular basis there. Funny story!

Hi, friends. Thanks for all the comments.

In order:
Burt: E.L. Konigsburg is probably better known for her 1st Newbery award winner, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler. The View from Saturday won the Newbery award in 1996 and I finished it a few minutes ago. LOVED IT! Please go re-read it, and tell me what you think. I haven't read Gregor the Overlander--what is it about?

Bob: A flat top and bird excrement--very bad combination.

Sarah: Marigold is great, and I'm looking forward to the book discussion in class. I have been told that the second one is not quite as good as the first, but I haven't had the time to read it yet. Let me know what you think. (I'm not big on prep work either).

Julie: Marigold is Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris. Sarah mentioned it in a previous email, I hunted it down at B/N, and voila--it's on my book list. I wouldn't peg it as a girl's book--I think your boys would like. Several of the main characters are male. Please send me your recommends!

Amanda: How funny. I think I know the spot you are talking about. There's a place like that near the front of our house--big ick. How are you?

Gregor is about a boy who falls into a mysterious world through an air vent in his laundry room. He encounters a world full of HUGE rats, roaches, bats, etc. It is actually a pretty good book and my boys LOVE it! It is the first in a series of 5 of 6 I think. We just finished reading Maniac Magee....absoutely wonderful! It deals with issues that talk about homeless, racial, bullies...I suggest reading it! Have you read "Love Ruby Lavender"? It is another heart stopper!!! I will pick up a copy of the view from saturday tomorrow! I look forward to reading it again! Love ya girl!

P.S. Just asking my 11-year-old: Gregor the Overlander is a big hit, and it's a series of 5 books (he offered to tell me the names, but I'm sure amazon.com can tell you! :-)

AND -- Julie, I think your boys would like Marigold, too -- especially if they are into higher level humor, as I'm sure they are. Very good fairy tale spoof.

One more comment:
Sarah, you MUST read Jean Ferris' book Much Ado About Grubstake. A spoof on westerns, and oh, so fun. Julie, I think your boys would like this one, too.

Thanks for all the tips, you faithful blog readers!
